Rihanna and Kanye play two lovers talking, most likely at night, possibly to each other, possibly to themselves. We don’t even know if they’re in the same place at the same time. Rihanna’s been drinking but if Kanye has, we don’t hear about it. It’s unclear who’s done what to whom, but they’re both wound up. Things aren’t going well — Rihanna might wild out, Kanye might go to jail. The guitar chords resolve but the song does not. The combined length of Rihanna’s first verse and hook is forty-five seconds. The single’s cover reads “Four Five Seconds” in Braille. Since it’s release, the song has peaked at number four on the Hot 100, becoming Rihanna’s 26th top ten song, McCartney’s 23rd (not counting his 34 with the Beatles), and West’s 15th. With this new song, McCartney now holds the record for longest time between top tens — with 29 years between this and “Spies Like Us”, which reached the top ten on February 8th, 1986.
